“I’m a trained hypnotist.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Really?”

Her smile was meant to gain his trust. “Do you want to try it?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know. How much money do you make?”

“I meant, do you want me to hypnotize you?”

He took a pack of gum out of his pocket and popped a piece in his mouth. “Well …”

She pulled at her necklace. A compass dangled from the chain. “It might help.”

He worked the gum savagely. “Yeah. Maybe.”

“Let’s try.”

He stood up suddenly.

“What?”

“I just remembered. I already clucked like a chicken at breakfast.”
