Family Values

“Nigel! Time to go!”

A head popped out above. “But it’s my day off,” Nigel whined down the stairs.

“For you.” He handed his son his coat. “Not for me.”

Nigel stuffed arms through sleeves, picked up his skateboard.

They both looked back up the narrow staircase to the silent flat above. He could think of nothing to say. The moment passed.

“Right. I’ve a meeting in half an hour.”

Nigel took his dad’s hand. “I’m ready.”

On the street, the familiar thumping of wheels echoed against hard surfaces.

Nigel squeezed his hand. “Tell me about your new project, Dad.”
