Most of the family attended the reunion. Aunts, uncles, cousins. It promised to be fun.
The book drew her in. Each page pulled the curtain to another world back centimeter by centimeter.
The girls were disappearing. The protagonist engaged, yet hinted of being disturbed.
“Harriet!” called father.
“What dad?” She didn’t look up.
“Leave her be,” chided mother. She glared at her husband.
“Everyone is going to look for the twins.”
“They haven’t …”
Their voices faded away. Harriet read on. Another girl, closer to the protagonist, vanished. Harriet felt chilled.
Hours later, she closed the book. “Where is everyone?”
