Left on a Shelf

She walked through the bookstore, her eyes as big as saucers, her hands reaching out and running along the bindings.

“You have books, real books!”

“Yes.”

“In my country there are no books. They have eradicated intellectuals.”

“Are you kidding?”

“I wish. Dumbing the majority down was an easy way to control democracy. People valued watching someone date 40 people at once on TV more than reading a thought provoking book.”

He shook his head. “Now, I know you are joking.”

“If only I was. The sheep didn’t see the train coming at them. Easier to control implies easier to subvert.”
