Sister’s Keeper

“Agnes will be mad.”

“Agnes?”

“Yes.”

His eyes widened. “I see.”

“You’ll fix it?”

The young man rifled a folder of papers. He didn’t answer.

Her craggy face puckered as she squinted at him. “Well?”

He bit a pen. “I don’t think we need to worry about Agnes now.”

She pointed a gnarled finger at him. “You don’t know Agnes.”

He cleared his throat. “You’re right. I don’t.”

“She gave it to me. Now one of you do-gooders broke it and took it!”

His head bobbed up and down. “It’s okay. Stay calm. Everything will be fine.”

“Give it back!”
